Itinerary

Dec 11 Day 1

Landing in Mexico City. Meet with the tour director and if time permits, visit Museo Nacional de Antropología (MNA). Celebrate mass. Dinner and overnight in Mexico City.

Dec 12 Day 2

Breakfast, after which we will go to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe to partake in the festivities. In the afternoon, we will visit the Church of Santiago in the Three Cultures Square, where they baptized St. Juan Diego. Dinner and overnight in Mexico city.

Dec 13 Day 3

After breakfast, transfer to the city of Puebla. Our bus will take us to over 10,000 feet above sea level, where we will view two magnificent peaks: an active volcano and a mountain topped with snow.We will visit the cathedral dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and the Church of St. Dominic to admire the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary built in 1690. Then we will see the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, where you will view the incorrupt body of Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio, patron saint of travelers. Mass. Dinner and overnight in Puebla.

Dec 14  DAY 4

After breakfast, we will depart to the State of Tlaxcala. First visit: Basilica of Our Lady of Ocotlán: you will admire the miraculous and perfectly preserved image of Our Lady. The image was found in a burned Ocote tree after She appeared to the visionary Juan Diego Bernardino in 1541. Mass and time for collecting healing water from the well.

We will continue to San Miguel del Milagro. This is the site where St. Michael the Archangel appeared to Diego Lazaro in 1631, and directed him to the Grotto and a well of miraculous healing water. Today the well is pretty dry, but we can get some of the water from the sacristy. (Bring your bottle with you)

Next, we will visit Tlaxcala, the capital of the smallest state in Mexico. Discover the Palace de la Constitution (exterior views) and its colonial buildings: the municipal palace, the courthouse, and the government palace. We will visit the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption where the first three martyrs of America are venerated (Blessed Cristobal, Antonio, and Juan), whose canonization was approved by Pope Francis in March 2017, and the former convent Franciscan of the Assumption, built in 1537. In colonial times open chapels were built to teach the indigenous people and have Holy Mass. We will visit one of them. Return to Mexico City for dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Dec 15 Day 5

MEXICO CITY – THE SHRINE OF GUADALUPE

In the morning, after breakfast, we will visit one of the biggest metropolis of the world – Mexico City – built on the site of the former capital of the Aztec Empire. Obligatory sightseeing points will be: Zocalo Square, which is the center of modern Mexico, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the centrally located Presidential Palace (from outside). Then we will go to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. This church has become one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Catholics, and its history dates back to 1531 when a devout, poor Indian man named Juan Diego (an Aztec convert to Christianity) received a vision of the Virgin Mary on Tepeyac Hill near what is now Mexico City.  We will visit the Basilica – the Old Basilica, the New Basilica, the Baptistery, the Indian Chapel, the chapel on Tepeyac Hill, and the bell tower. The new Basilica which was built in 1976, was designed by the eminent Mexican architect Pedro Ramirez Vasquez, and its form of creation resembles a tent, such as Moses erected on Mount Sinai. Free time for prayer and purchase of religious souvenirs and gifts. After dinner, we will transfer to the airport.

Mexico pilgrimage

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary of Mexico City is the oldest and largest cathedral in the Americas and seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico. It is situated atop the former Aztec sacred precinct near the Templo Mayor on the northern side of the Plaza de la Constitución in downtown Mexico City. The cathedral was built in sections from 1573 to 1813 around the original church that was constructed soon after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlán, eventually replacing it entirely. Spanish architect Claudio de Arciniega planned the construction, drawing inspiration from Gothic cathedrals in Spain.
