Upon arrival, we visit the Field of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli), home to the city’s top tourist attractions: the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo Cathedral dedicated to St. Rainieri, the St. John Baptistery. Continue to Siena, a medieval city, the birthplace of St. Catherine. Sightseeing tour of Siena including the Piazza del Campo, scene of annual Palio horse race and the Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption. Large in scale and ornately decorated inside and out, Siena Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Italian Gothic architecture. Mass. Also, we will stop at Basilica of Saint Francis, Siena, where the Eucharistic Miracle of Siena is preserved (The public display of the host is not available today). Dinner & overnight in Siena.
DAY 6: Oct 20 Friday Morning, travel to Assisi, the city of St. Francis, saint patron of Italy. The town of Assisi with its winding medieval streets and sacred shrines has been one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations. We visit the Lower Basilica housing the tomb of St Francis and the Upper Basilica with famous Giotto frescoes, illustrating scenes from St Francis life. We also visit the Basilica of Santa Chiara. Mass. Dinner & overnight in Assisi.
DAY 7: Oct 21 Saturday After breakfast, travel to Cascia. Continue to Orvieto, the site of the Eucharistic Miracle in the 13th century. Entrance to the Duomo and San Brizio Chapel. Transfer to Lanciano area for dinner and overnight.
DAY 8: Oct 22 Sunday Morning, visit the Church of St. Francesco in Lanciano, where we will celebrate Mass, a place where many pilgrims come every year. In the 7th century, the Eucharistic miracle happened in the walls of the monastery of St. Longinus (a contemporary church was eventually built in its place) – during the liturgy, bread and wine turned into body and blood in the hands of Basilian monk, who at that time had doubts about religion. Seeing this, the priest fell to his knees and began to pray. And the pilgrims began to come to the temple. Having conducted more than one hundred studies, scientists have not been able to explain this case from a scientific point of view. Continue to San Giovanni Rotondo, we visit the Basilica, Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church, the tomb of Padre Pio and his relics. Dinner and overnight in San Giovanni Rotondo.
DAY 09: Oct 23 Monday Today, travel to Amalfi Town, one of Italy’s most beautiful areas is the famous Amalfi Coast with its stunning views of towns perched looking over the Mediterranean Sea below. The town of Amalfi itself has another attraction and that is the Duomo (Cathedral), houses the relics of Saint Andrew the Apostle, the brother of Saint Peter, as related in both the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Mark: “As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen”. Mass. Continue to Naples for dinner & overnight.
Day 10: Oct 24 Tuesday Morning, stop at Naples Cathedral. In 472 AD, an eruption of Mount Vesuvius threatened Naples, similar to the one that destroyed Pompeii four centuries earlier. People fled to the catacombs of the city where Januarius was entombed and implored his intercession. The eruption stopped and the city was saved. In addition to the relics of Saint Januarius (in the crypt) the Cathedral features beautiful artwork and statuary both in the main sanctuary and in its many chapels. Mass. Then, travel to Pompeii, once a thriving Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 which caused death of all those trped between the volcano and the sea. Pompeii lay buried for nearly 1,700 years. It wasn’t until 1748 that the archeologists began slowly uncovering the ancient city, preserved under nine feet of volcanic ash. Later afternoon, continue to Rome for dinner and overnight.
DAY 11: Oct 25 Wednesday Morning, transfer to the Vatican, audience with Pope Francis. After lunch, the sightseeing tour of the three major basilicas – St Paul Outside the Walls and St. Mary Major, St John in Lateran Basilica, the oldest of the four major basilicas of Rome, home to the relics of Peter and Paul. Crossing the street, we come to the Holy Staircase which is believed to be brought to Rome by St. Helen in the 4th Century (photo stop only). Mass. Dinner and overnight in Rome.
DAY 12: Oct 26 Thursday After breakfast, transfer to Vatican to visit the Vatican Museum, continue with St. Peter‘s Basilica.
