Itinerary

June 3 Depart Toronto for Rome.

June 4 Arrive in Rome, visit one of the three major basilicas – St. Mary Major and St. John in Lateran Basilica – the oldest of the four major basilicas of Rome, home to the relics of Peter and Paul. We will also have the opportunity to see the Holy Staircase, which is believed to be brought to Rome by St. Helen in the 4th Century (photo stop only). St Paul Outside the Walls. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

June 5 Morning, transfer to the Vatican where, hopefully, will have a chance to have an audience with Pope Francis.  In the afternoon, we enjoy a city tour of Rome including the Colosseum (picture stop only, no entrance included) and the Spanish Steps. We also visit the Trevi Fountain, where you will have the opportunity to toss the three coins. If timing permits, visit Catacombs of Rome. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

June 6 After early morning mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, visit Vatican gardens, and then continue on to St. Peter‘s Basilica. Afternoon, travel to Naples area. Enroute stop in Monte Cassino and visit  Monte Cassino Monastery. Dinner and overnight in Naples area.

June 7 Morning, visit Naples Cathedral. In 472 AD, an eruption of Mount Vesuvius threatened Naples, similar to the one that destroyed Pompeii four centuries earlier. People fled to the catacombs of the city where Januarius was entombed and implored his intercession. The eruption stopped and the city was saved. In addition to the relics of Saint Januarius (in the crypt) the Cathedral features beautiful artwork and statuary both in the main sanctuary and in its many chapels. Mass. Also, we will have a panoramic city sightseeing tour and see the impressive Castel Dell’Ovo, Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace, the Basilica of San Francesco Di Paola, the San Carlo Opera House, the Gallery of Umberto I and the imposing Maschio Angioino. Afternoon, travel to Amalfi Town, one of Italy’s most beautiful areas is the famous Amalfi Coast with its stunning views of towns perched looking over the Mediterranean Sea below. The town of Amalfi itself has another attraction and that is the Duomo (Cathedral), houses the relics of Saint Andrew the Apostle, the brother of Saint Peter, as related in both the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Mark: “As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen”. Mass. Continue to Benevento for dinner & overnight.

June 8 After breakfast, we travel to San Giovanni Rotondo and visit the Basilica, Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church, the tomb of Padre Pio and his relics. We celebrate mass in Santa Maria delle Grazie convent. Continue to Lanciano area for dinner and overnight.

June 9 Morning, visit the Church of St. Francesco in Lanciano, a place where many pilgrims come every year. In the 7th century, the Eucharistic miracle happened in the walls of the monastery of St. Longinus (a contemporary church was eventually built in its place) – during the liturgy, bread and wine turned into body and blood in the hands of Basilian monk, who at that time had doubts about religion. Seeing this, the priest fell to his knees and began to pray. And the pilgrims began to come to the temple. Having conducted more than one hundred studies, scientists have not been able to explain this case from a scientific point of view. Continue to Cascia. We celebrate mass in the Basilica of St. Rita of Cascia, where we also see St. Rita’s tomb, relics and preserved Eucharistic Miracle from Siena. Transfer to Orvieto, the site of the Eucharistic Miracle in the 13th century. Entrance to the Duomo and San Brizio Chapel. Dinner & overnight.

June 10 After breakfast, travel to Assisi, the city of St. Francis, saint patron of Italy. The town of Assisi with its winding medieval streets and sacred shrines has been one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations. We visit the Lower Basilica housing the tomb of St Francis and the Upper Basilica with famous Giotto frescoes, illustrating scenes from St Francis life. We also visit the Basilica of Santa Chiara. Mass. Continue to Florence for dinner and overnight.

June 11 Florence, cradle of Renaissance. Walking tour will take us to the famous Santa Croce church, Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore and Baptistry. Mass. Dinner and overnight in Florence.

June 12 Morning, travel to Padua. Celebrate mass at the Basilica dedicated to St. Anthony. St. Anthony is buried here in the small church of Santa Maria Mater Domini, which was incorporated into the present basilica as the Chapel of the Dark Madonna. Dinner and overnight.

June 13 Full day site trip to Venice. Upon arrival we are transferred by private boat to the Square of St Mark, where we visit the magnificent Basilica. Also, we see Doges Palace (photo stop from outside only), the Bridge of Sighs. Mass. Some free time for shopping. Return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

June 14 Morning, transfer to airport for return flight back home.
