I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith”. Mass. Dinner and overnight in Rome.
Sep 18 This morning we are transferred to St. Peter’s Square for an audience with the Holy Father. In the afternoon – with visit to St Paul Outside the Walls Basilica, rising on the legendary burial place of St Paul Apostle, The Basilica, rebuilt after the fire on 1823, is the second largest Church after St. Peter at the Vatican. Here, under the major altar, there’s the tomb of St Paul Apostles and for this reason this Basilica has been a pilgrimage destination. Mass. Next we’ll visit the Three Fountain Abbey raised on the spot where St. Paul was beheaded by order of the Emperor Nero. Legend accounts for the three springs (fontane) with the assertion that, when severed from Paul’s body, his head bounced and struck the earth in three different places, from which fountains sprang up. These still flow and are located in the sanctuary. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

We visit the Lower Basilica housing the tomb of St Francis and the Upper Basilica with famous Giotto frescoes, illustrating scenes from St Francis life. We also visit the Basilica of Santa Chiara. In the afternoon visit to Santa Maria Degli Angeli Basilica, where we celebrate a private Mass. Sep 26 In the morning we visit Philippi where Paul delivered his first sermon in Europe, sowing the seeds of Christianity. “And from there (He went) to Philippi, which is the leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman Colony. We remained in this city some days…” Acts 16:12-18 Here Paul baptized a certain woman named Lydia, the first Christian convert in Europe. The Roman forum, completely excavated, is from after Paul’s time. Among the ruins, located on the rocky ledge above the town’s main road is the prison where Paul and Silas were thrown. Continue into the modern port city of Kavala, ancient Neapolis, where Paul accompanied by Silas, Luke and Timothy, first set foot in Europe. Dinner and overnight in Thessaloniki.

It derives its name from its hot sulphur springs. The Hot Gates is “the place of hot springs” and in Greek mythology it is the cavernous entrance to Hades”. One of the most famous battles in ancient history took place here, in 480 BC, when Leonidas and a band of 300 brave Spartans managed to temporarily halt the invading Persian army of Xerxes.
